Meet Cynthia Routhier, RCC, EMDR Therapist

I’m Cynthia Routhier, a Registered Clinical Counsellor providing online EMDR therapy in BC to adults in English and French.
I work with adults who may be experiencing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, attachment wounds, dissociation, emotional overwhelm, or patterns that continue to affect their lives despite insight, previous therapy, or efforts to change them.
My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and carefully paced. I place particular emphasis on preparation, stabilization, and developing the resources needed to approach difficult material without simply pushing through distress.
Together, we look at what is happening now, what you would like to be different, and whether earlier experiences may be contributing to current reactions or patterns. EMDR gives us a structured way to work with those connections while respecting your pace, readiness, and individual needs.

Looking for Online EMDR Therapy BC?
Cynthia provides secure online EMDR therapy to adults throughout British Columbia. Whether you live in Vancouver, Revelstoke, a smaller community, or simply prefer the convenience and privacy of attending therapy from home, online sessions can make specialized EMDR treatment more accessible.
For adults seeking online EMDR therapy in BC, location does not have to be a barrier to working with an EMDR therapist. Cynthia works with clients across the province and assesses individually whether virtual EMDR is an appropriate clinical fit for your needs and circumstances.
Online EMDR uses the same structured eight-phase treatment model as EMDR therapy delivered in person. Depending on your needs, bilateral stimulation may include guided eye movements, alternating tapping, or other approaches suited to virtual sessions.
Before beginning trauma processing, Cynthia considers your readiness for EMDR, privacy and physical environment, current supports, and ability to remain present during processing. Time is also given to developing resources and strategies for grounding, emotional regulation, and closure.
For many adults, online EMDR therapy in BC offers a practical way to access specialized trauma treatment while remaining in a familiar environment. The decision to work online, however, is based on your individual needs rather than assuming virtual therapy is the right fit for everyone.
EMDR Therapy in English and French
Cynthia provides online EMDR therapy in BC in both English and French, allowing you to work in the language that feels most natural to you. As a bilingual therapist who grew up in Quebec, I understand that the language you use in therapy can matter—particularly when working with memories, emotions, relationships, and experiences from earlier in life.
You may prefer to do therapy entirely in French or entirely in English. You may also find that certain memories, feelings, or expressions come more naturally in one language than the other. We can work in the language that feels most appropriate to you and move between English and French when that is helpful.
For Francophone adults living in communities where French-speaking trauma therapy is difficult to access, online sessions provide an opportunity to work with an EMDR therapist in French without having to travel.

What Can EMDR Therapy Help With?
Adults seeking online EMDR therapy in BC may come with a clearly identified traumatic experience or with patterns that have developed gradually over time. You may know that something keeps happening even when you understand why.
You might become anxious in situations that do not seem dangerous, shut down during conflict, feel responsible for other people’s emotions, struggle to set boundaries, or find yourself repeating relationship patterns you thought you had already worked through.
Sometimes these reactions are connected to experiences that are easy to identify. Other times, they developed gradually through relationships, repeated experiences, chronic stress, loss, or environments in which you learned ways of coping that were useful then but are getting in the way now.
I work with adults experiencing trauma and PTSD, anxiety and panic, attachment wounds, dissociation, emotional overwhelm, people-pleasing, perfectionism, shame, grief and loss, chronic stress and burnout, difficult relationship patterns, chronic pain, first responder experiences, and major life transitions.
You do not need to decide which category you fit into before contacting me. We can begin with what is happening now and what you would like to be different.
When You Understand the Pattern but It Still Happens
Many people come to therapy already understanding themselves quite well.
You may know that you are safe and still feel afraid. You may know that you are allowed to say no and still feel guilty when you set a boundary. You may understand why criticism affects you and still experience an immediate emotional or physical reaction when it happens.
Insight matters, but insight does not necessarily change an automatic response.
EMDR allows us to explore whether earlier experiences continue to influence what happens in the present and to work with the memories, beliefs, emotions, and physical responses associated with them.
You Don’t Have to Tell Me Everything
EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a difficult or traumatic experience.
Talking is part of therapy, particularly as we understand your history, identify what you want to work on, prepare for processing, and evaluate how therapy is progressing. But EMDR does not depend on repeatedly recounting traumatic experiences in detail.
You remain in control of what you disclose. We can work with enough information to understand what needs attention while respecting material you are not ready—or do not want—to describe fully.
How I Work
My approach is collaborative, structured, and individualized. We develop a treatment plan based on what is bringing you to therapy, what you would like to change, your history, current circumstances, strengths, and the pace that is appropriate for you.
EMDR does not mean immediately beginning trauma processing. Depending on your needs, we may spend time developing resources, strengthening emotional regulation, understanding patterns, assessing readiness, and identifying experiences that may be connected to what is happening now.
I pay particular attention to preparation and pacing when working with trauma, attachment wounds, and dissociation. The goal is not to push you through difficult material as quickly as possible. It is to work in a way that is thoughtful, purposeful, and responsive to you.
Although EMDR is central to my trauma work, I may also integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), somatic and body-based approaches, hypnosis, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Ego State Therapy when they are clinically useful.
Couples Counselling
I also work with couples who want to strengthen their relationship, improve communication, and better understand the patterns that develop between them.
Couples often come to therapy because they find themselves having the same conflict repeatedly, feeling disconnected, struggling to communicate without becoming defensive or overwhelmed, or having difficulty repairing after conflict. Sometimes individual experiences and attachment patterns also influence how each partner responds within the relationship.
My couples work draws from the Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and the Gottman Method. These approaches help us look beyond the immediate disagreement to understand the emotional, relational, and attachment dynamics that may be maintaining the pattern.
We can work on communication, emotional connection, conflict and repair, trust, boundaries, intimacy, recurring relationship patterns, and navigating significant changes or stressors together.
The goal is not to decide who is right or wrong. It is to better understand what happens between you and develop different ways of responding to one another.
